The Borgia collection at Museo Propaganda Fide in Rom
An entire room (Borgia Room) of the Missionary Museum is dedicated to the enormous collection of Cardinal Stefano Borgia (1731 – 1804) who has always believed in the culture that is very distant and different. The collection includes a series of Roman antiquities, Egyptian, Arabic, Greek, Volsci, sent to him by Indian Catholic missions around the world. Series of portraits of the scholars of the Academy of Velletri Volsci The Academy was founded in 1765 Volsci of Velletri as a Literary Society, characterized his activities in a more strictly antiquarian studying Borgia’s eclectic collection consists of works of art and antiquities from around the world. It owes its name to the discovery, in Velletri in 1784, the so-called “plates Volscan” a series of architectural reliefs in terracotta Etruscan Lazio tradition, dating back to the first half of the sixth century. B.C. The nineteen portraits of scholars (originally twenty-one, went missing the portraits of Louis Lanzi Fabrega and LG) were painted from 1784 – in large part by the Danish painter Johan Herman Cabotte (1754-1814) – with the intent to celebrate intense cultural relations that Cardinal Stefano Borgia had with intellectuals from all over Europe, which he named “Academic Volsci” following the publication in the volume of artefacts of the museum studies Borgia. The portraits were part of the “gallery of illustrious men” of the Borgia palace Altemps; in the nineteenth century were exhibited in the Museum of Propaganda Fide Borgia.
Born in Cadiz in 1816 by an Italian father and Spanish mother, Carlos Cuarterón had a long career at sea, especially in increasing his experience on the route between Manila and Macao, where he became captain of the Spanish navy in 1841. In 1847 the missionary in Indonesia, undertook an expedition on board the ship Lynx flying the British flag, for “… the redemption of the enslaved Christians, the destruction of piracy, the exploration of the vast archipelago for research purposes of the places most likely to founding of the Missions …”. The expedition, however, was blocked by the Spanish authorities who ruled the Philippines and set fire to the ship Cuarterón. Appointed in 1855, a priest in the Apostolic by Pope Borneo, the courageous priest continued his mission with makeshift equipment and return to Rome, he published his travel experiences and knowledge with the aim of promoting the establishment of missions. His work was published by the Printing House of the Congregation. In 1852, fourteen paintings donated to Propaganda Fide (if they present here only the eight tracked), describing the places he explored (Salibaboo, Talaor, Sanguey, Nanus, Mindanao, Celebes, Borneo, Bahalatolis, Tambisan, Sulu, and Labuan Toolyan ), and the natives met illustrious occasion.
